“Grace”

What a blessing it is with each issue of the Baptist Testimony to review the many reports of God’s grace demonstrated in and through the churches and servants of the MARBC.  This issue is no exception.  In fact, there is SO MUCH information in this particular issue that I could not include the column that I had prepared for this issue.  However, I think that you will agree with me that sacrificing the space for my column is worth it as you read the many ways in which God is at work among us.  The theme of “grace” is evident on every page. “Conviction”
Have you noticed that there doesn’t seem to be as much talk about spiritual convictions anymore?  By conviction, I am referring to a “strong belief in a Biblical truth or spiritual principle that convinces a person to pursue a change of thinking and/or conduct.”  It is the issue that Proverbs 23:7 is addresses by declaring, “For as [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he.” [Read more...]

“Rest”

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”  (Matthew 11:28-29)

It is Monday morning as I pen this particular column.  I am reflecting upon another Lord’s Day of worship and ministry.  I have reviewed my calendar for the week and prayerfully considered what lies ahead.  I am also anticipating the week ahead with its promise of yet-to-be realized joys, opportunities, and challenges.  While I am in this mode, would you permit me to do a little “Monday morning quarterbacking” from a pastoral perspective? BELMONT, West Cannon Baptist Church (Doug Crawford, Pastor) - On Sunday evening, February 13, 2011, the West Cannon Baptist Church family honored Pastor Dave and Mary Parmerlee for twenty years of faithful and fruitful ministry. They were given cards from church family members that expressed their love and gratitude for the Parmerlees’ service.  The church also presented the Parmerlees a gift to send them on a trip to Spain to visit their daughter Carissa, who is serving as a short-term missionary. The church states that it is already looking forward to celebrating the Parmerlees’ thirtieth anniversary. [Read more...]

“Wait”

Recently I had the “pleasure” of sitting in what was most appropriately labeled as a “waiting room.”  I am sure that you, like me, do not find it to be the most enjoyable place to sit for any period of time.  Especially if, like me, you are there simply to have blood drawn for routine tests and there are people sitting around you who are hacking, sniffing, and wheezing. I watched as a man honked out such a quick and loud sneeze that he barely got his hand to his face.  He then used that same hand to open the same door that I had to enter a few minutes later!  Joy!  While sitting there in this wonderfully germ laden arena, I speculated how many days from then I would be back there because of what I was now inhaling!”   [Read more...]
