“Shepherds”

Writer Alan Smith shares the story about a preacher who went into children’s church to talk with the children about Psalm 23. He told the children about sheep, that they weren’t smart and needed lots of guidance, and that a shepherd’s job was to stay close to the sheep, protect them from wild animals and keep them from wandering off and doing dumb things that would get them hurt or killed. WITH THE LORD

Charles B. Hart.  Dr. Charles B. Hart, 96, was ushered into the presence of His Lord on Sunday morning January 15.  A memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church of Calumet with Doctor Les Ollila and Rev. Bruce Nolen officiating.  A graduate of Stanton High School, Charles moved to the Upper Peninsula’s Copper Country in 1937 to serve as a song leader at the GitcheGumee Bible Camp in Eagle River, MI. It was at this camp that he met his future wife, Joyce Rader, the daughter of the camp’s founder and director, Paul Rader. They were married on June 22, 1940 in Silvis, Illinois.  After pastoring downstate in the Stanton area, Charles accepted a call in 1949 to become the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Calumet, MI where he served as pastor until 1974. In addition to being pastor of First Baptist Church, Charles also served as the Director of GitcheGumee Bible Camp in 1957, succeeding his father-in-law, Rev. John Rader, who passed away that year. He served as president of that camp until 1981.  In 1999, Charles Hart’s extraordinary life was publicly recognized by his being given an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Northland Baptist College of Dunbar Wisconsin.  [Read more...]

“Imprint”

The start of a new year has often been described by phrases such as, “a fresh start,” “the turning of a new leaf or page,” and “starting with a clean slate.” Perhaps in this highly technological age we will need to come up with some new phrases to mark the occasion like, “proceeding with a clean hard drive,” “upgrading your software,” or “downloading a new app!” [Read more...]

“Amazing!”

In the last issue of the Baptist Testimony I chose the word “Grace” to head this column. I did so based upon the wonderful ways in which God has blessed the churches of the MARBC through shared ministry and in anticipation of His blessings in the fall season of ministry. The anticipated MARBC Conference also centered upon the theme of “grace.” [Read more...]

69th MARBC ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The word “amazing” also appropriately expresses the response of those who recently attended the 69th Annual Conference of the MARBC held at Northeastern Baptist Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan on October 24-25. The theme of the conference was “Reflecting God’s Grace,” and the speakers who shared at the conference reminded those in attendance of the amazing nature of the grace of God. This grace enables the redeemed in Christ to overcome human barriers and prejudices and graciously extend themselves to every person regardless of background or ethnicity. [Read more...]

“Grace”

What a blessing it is with each issue of the Baptist Testimony to review the many reports of God’s grace demonstrated in and through the churches and servants of the MARBC.  This issue is no exception.  In fact, there is SO MUCH information in this particular issue that I could not include the column that I had prepared for this issue.  However, I think that you will agree with me that sacrificing the space for my column is worth it as you read the many ways in which God is at work among us.  The theme of “grace” is evident on every page. “Conviction”
Have you noticed that there doesn’t seem to be as much talk about spiritual convictions anymore?  By conviction, I am referring to a “strong belief in a Biblical truth or spiritual principle that convinces a person to pursue a change of thinking and/or conduct.”  It is the issue that Proverbs 23:7 is addresses by declaring, “For as [a man] thinks in his heart, so is he.” [Read more...]
