A Special Note Regarding the Baptist Testimony

The MARBC Council of 15 recently approved a change in the publication schedule of the Baptist Testimony. Beginning with this issue, the Baptist Testimony will now be a bi-monthly publication. This means that the amount of issues published per year will be reduced from 11 to 6. To compensate for the reduced amount of issues, each issue of the Baptist Testimony will now be six pages instead of four. The publication schedule for the six issues will be: January-February / March-April / May-June / July-August / September-October / November-December.

The reason for this change is two-fold. First, we are adjusting the frequency of publication due to the consistent increase in mail costs and the negative impact this has upon the MARBC budget. The second reason involves the development of a new ministry related publication called “For Your Strengthening.” This new publication will be sent out quarterly as an e-mail / downloadable publication. The focus of “For Your Strengthening” will be encouragement and practical help for those involved in ministry. “For Your Strengthening” will be sent out in months opposite of the publication of the Baptist Testimony. Subscriptions for this publication are free, but subscribers will need to send their email address in order to be placed on the special mailing list.

There will be no changes in subscription costs for the Baptist Testimony. It has been several years since there has been a subscription increase and the Council of 15 agreed to keep the annual subscription price the same during this adjustment in the publication. Likewise, there will be no adjustment or increase in the advertising rates for the Baptist Testimony.

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of the Baptist Testimony. We are thankful for the many churches and individuals who submit items for publication. We trust that the publications of the MARBC will continue to be a blessing to you. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact us. Thank you for your input and prayerful support!

Jim Vogel, Associate National Representative of the GARBC was the speaker. Workshops were also offered in the following categories: Men and Women, Jim and Jeannie Vogel; Teens, Will Payne; and Children, Jay Cooper. New EMARBC Council members were also selected at the meeting: Tom Cooper (Byron Baptist, Byron), Jerry Diserens (Evangel Baptist, Taylor), Jack Dowden (Emmanuel Baptist, Flint), Scott Kigar (First Baptist, Rochester), Shawn Rittmiller (First Baptist, Freeland), and Rick Yokel (Tabernacle, Hazel Park).

FENTON, First Baptist Church (Pastor Josh Gates) - First Baptist Church in Fenton is rejoicing in the calling of a new pastor. Josh Gates, who formerly served as the church’s youth pastor, was officially installed as senior pastor on Sunday, October 26. A special installation service was held during the morning worship service followed by a fellowship luncheon. Wilbur Henke, who formerly served as the pastor of First Baptist for 19 years, gave the charge to the pastor. Ken Floyd, Executive Director of the MARBC, gave the charge to the church. Zack Dawson, who is serving as a youth pastor intern at First Baptist, led the scripture reading. Dr. Joseph Bower, who served as interim pastor and a mentor to Pastor Gates, shared closing comments and led in a dedicatory prayer. Pastor Josh and his wife Andrea were married last year and are rejoicing in the birth of their son, Thomas, in October.

KALAMAZOO, Northeastern Baptist Church (Pastor George Coon) – Northeastern Baptist Church (Kalamazoo) is honored to have Rev. Greg Bishop as an integral part of their staff during the past 20 years! Pastor Bishop marked his 20th anniversary at Northeastern on June 15, 2008.

LUDINGTON, Calvary Baptist Church (Pastor Tim Yankee) – Sam and Jen Lake are sent out from Calvary Baptist Church of Ludington, Michigan (Pastor Tim Yankee). They are serving under Baptist Mid-Missions. They are going to help plant a church in the south Bronx of New York City with Marty and Val Silverberg. Sam and Jen are currently on pre-field ministry at this time and are scheduling meetings for 2009 and 2010. Here are some of the ministries of the church that the Lakes will be involved in: Sam will be preaching, they will teach Sunday School, help start AWANA, VBS, youth group and disciple new believers. There will also be a food program at the church. Jen will be starting a pregnancy care center. These are some of the tools that will be used to share the saving message of Christ with the lost people of the Bronx. The needs of the people of the Bronx are many. But their most urgent need is the gospel. The great commission tells us to “go ye into all the world”. Of the 2 million people in the Bronx, 30% were born in a foreign country. The world has come to us! The Bronx truly is a “foreign” field in America. Sam and Jen recently moved to Williamson, NY but will gladly return to Michigan for meetings. They can be reached by sending them an email . You can find more information about the Lake family at their web site: www.samandjenlake.com. October’s Word:  “Serve”

One of the great joys that result from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the fact that a person is no longer a “slave of sin” and instead becomes a “servant of Christ.”  The Apostle Paul spends a great deal of time developing this concept in his detailed doctrinal discussion of salvation in Romans 6.  For example, in Romans 6:6, Christians are reminded that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”  By contrast, he further states to Christians, “And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness” (Romans 6:18).  What is one of the primary goals of this new found freedom?  “But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” (Romans 6:22) [Read more...]

August’s Word:  “Repent”

Sharon and I were stopping for lunch one day while traveling when we were startled by the blaring sound of emergency warning sirens. While we were quite concerned about what prompted such an alarm, we quickly noticed that there seemed to be no sense of panic or urgency on the part of others walking or driving in the area. After speculating for a few seconds, I glanced at my watch.  Recognizing that it was noon, I surmised that the abrasive noise of the sirens was probably the result of a routine test of the area warning system.  Sure enough, in a few seconds the sirens stopped.  [Read more...]

June’s Word:  “Exceeding”

Ephesians 2:7 – “that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

The “exceeding” ministry of God in the life of His followers was the primary emphasis of this year’s MARBC Men’s Retreat, held on May 1-3 at beautiful Lake Ann Baptist Camp and Retreat Center near Traverse City.  Over 400 men enjoyed wonderful worship, challenging messages from God’s Word, encouraging fellowship, and great meals.  We were blessed to discover that this was the first MARBC retreat for several men.
